Conway increase manufacturing capacity at Somerlap Pallets
Expansion of the Somerlap pallet-manufacturing capability has seen the installation of a second crosscut saw supplied by the West Bromwich-based specialist, Conway Saw.

Commenting on the installation, Somerlap Managing Director, Kevin Bond said: "This is our second machine of this type, the first installed by Conway in 2005 having met all our expectations. With the addition of an in-feed conveyor to deliver the raw materials to the machine and an out-feed conveyor to take the waste directly into skips for recycling, the new machine will increase machining capacity of raw materials and enable us to maintain the expansion of our pallet manufacturing business".

Proficut X50 high speed cross cutting machine
The new saw is a Proficut X50® high speed cross cutting machine and replaces a 20-year old ex-sawmill machine that had done sterling service. With an accuracy of +/- 0.5mm, and with automatic, semi-automatic and manual modes, the Proficut X50 is a universal machine offering both high production capacity and the possibility to cut individual lengths at any time. Ease of use and safe operation were key features of the design of a machine that will provide up to 100% increase in throughput when compared to a manually operated machine.

A fully computerised setting system has the capacity to store up to 100 programmes - each with a memory of twenty sizes per programme and twenty cuts per size. The Magelis controller will work out how many units can be cut from each piece of timber and what waste there will be thereby enabling the single operator to maximise the yield.

WARNING

TECHNICAL SECTION
NEW SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR
WOODWORKING MACHINERY

Important changes to the safety regulations which apply to all types of woodworking machines are now in place.

The 1974 Woodworking Machinery Regulations are no longer in force, they have been repealed and replaced by the 'Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998' (PUWER 98) and its associated Approved Code of Practice (ACoP), entitled 'Safe use of woodworking machinery'.

BRAKING

The 'Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery' ACoP says that you must fit a brake to any machine where there is a risk of contact with the cutting tools during rundown and where the normal stopping time is more than 10 seconds.
You must carry out a risk assessment to determine which machines require braking but the ACoP says that they are considered necessary for the following machines in the time specified.

By the 5th December 2003 for circular saws, cross cut saws, single end and double end tenoners, combined machines incorporating either a circular saw or a tenoning attachment.

For bandsaws, resaws, spindle moulders, routers, surface planers, thicknessers, combined surface planing and thicknessing machines, braking must be fitted by the 5th December 2005.

For all other machines, users have until 5th December 2008 to fit braking. The HSE Woodworking National Interest Group Leader, Mr E Marshall says, "TAKE ACTION NOW. Where they have been identified as necessary, braking devices should be fitted as soon as possible".

TOOLING

New tooling, known as 'limited cutter projection tooling' (LCP), which substantially reduces the severity of injury and the risk of kickback, is required for all spindle moulders and single end tenoners by 5th December 2003

If you already have LCP tooling - you must use it now! In any event LCP tooling must be put into use by December 2003 to replace non-compliant tooling.

Further details about these and other safety requirements which apply to your woodworking machinery are contained in the 'Safe use of woodworking machinery' Ref. L114, price £8.00 from HSE Books, Tel 01787 881165 HSE. Woodworking information sheets No. 37 on tooling and No. 38 on braking, contain detailed information, available free of charge from HSE Books.
