The 1974 Woodworking Machinery Regulations are no longer in force, they have been repealed and replaced by the 'Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998' (PUWER 98) and its associated Approved Code of Practice (ACoP), entitled 'Safe use of woodworking machinery'.
|
BRAKING |
![]() |
The 'Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery' ACoP says that you must fit a brake to any machine where there is a risk of contact with the cutting tools during rundown and where the normal stopping time is more than 10 seconds. |
| You must carry out a risk assessment to determine which
machines require braking but the ACoP says that they are considered
necessary for the following machines in the time specified. By the 5th December 2003 for circular saws, cross cut saws, single end and double end tenoners, combined machines incorporating either a circular saw or a tenoning attachment. For bandsaws, resaws, spindle moulders, routers, surface planers, thicknessers, combined surface planing and thicknessing machines, braking must be fitted by the 5th December 2005. For all other machines, users have until 5th December 2008 to fit braking. The HSE Woodworking National Interest Group Leader, Mr E Marshall says, "TAKE ACTION NOW. Where they have been identified as necessary, braking devices should be fitted as soon as possible". |

TOOLING |
![]() |
New tooling, known as 'limited cutter projection tooling' (LCP), which substantially reduces the severity of injury and the risk of kickback, is required for all spindle moulders and single end tenoners by 5th December 2003 |
|
If you already have LCP tooling - you must use it now! In any event LCP tooling must be put into use by December 2003 to replace non-compliant tooling. Further details about these and other safety requirements which apply to your woodworking machinery are contained in the 'Safe use of woodworking machinery' Ref. L114, price £8.00 from HSE Books, Tel 01787 881165 HSE. Woodworking information sheets No. 37 on tooling and No. 38 on braking, contain detailed information, available free of charge from HSE Books. |
